LANSING – Today, State Representative LaMar Lemmons (D-Detroit)
introduced legislation which will allow the Detroit Public School District to establish and maintain one or more schools
in which enrollment is limited to the pupils of the same sex.
"There are too many families in Detroit who cannot afford to send their kids to the private or religious academies that
provide a single sex education and this bill would alleviate that financial burden, "said Rep. Lemmons.
Lemmons introduced this bill as a result of the many calls he received from his constituents. They lamented that they
couldn't afford private schools and wanted to see the private school single sex model become an option in the public
school system.
The bill has been referred to the Education Committee. "I am amenable to expanding single sex education to other
school districts throughout our great state," Lemmons added.
